What FVOPA Certified Organic Actually Means in Canadian Cannabis

FVOPA Certified Organic is the only meaningful organic certification available to Canadian cannabis producers. It's issued by the Fraser Valley Organic Producers Association, a CFIA-designated certification body operating under the Canada Organic Regime, and it covers cultivation methods, inputs, soil management, and record-keeping.
Here's the part most producers don't explain clearly: the certification applies at the farm level. The way we grow is certified. Individual finished products may or may not carry the certification, depending on what happens to them post-harvest.
This piece is about how that actually works, and why we tell you the difference instead of glossing over it.

What FVOPA Actually Is
The Fraser Valley Organic Producers Association has been certifying organic farms in Canada since 2001. They're a non-profit, CFIA-designated certifier, ISO 17065 accredited, and operate under the Canada Organic Regime — the federal framework that governs every legitimate "organic" claim in Canadian agriculture. Their certifications carry equivalency recognition with USDA NOP, EU Organic, and other major international standards.
That's a lot of acronyms. What it means in plain terms is that when you see FVOPA on a Canadian cannabis package, you're looking at a federally recognised audit done by a body whose work is legible to organic regulators around the world.
For cannabis specifically, FVOPA developed an Internal Standard for Cannabis Production. It's a separate document because the Canadian Organic Regime was written for food and agriculture, not for a Cannabis Act-regulated crop, and certain cannabis-specific realities — Health Canada testing thresholds, post-harvest processing, tracked inventory — needed their own framework. The FVOPA Internal Standard maps cannabis production back to the same COR principles that apply to certified organic vegetables, fruit, and grain.
That's the standard we're certified against. It's the only one in Canada with regulatory legitimacy.
What Certification Actually Requires
There's a perception that organic certification is something you apply for once and then move on. It isn't.
The application process starts with an Organic System Plan. This document describes every input, every cultivation method, every cleaning agent, every soil amendment, and every record-keeping procedure on the farm. FVOPA's Certification Committee reviews it. If it's accepted, an inspector visits the farm. If the inspection passes, certification is granted.
After that, recertification happens every year. Annual inspections. Updated documentation. Any input we want to introduce — a new soil amendment, a new pest management approach, a new cleaning product — has to be cleared against the Permitted Substances List under the Canadian Organic Standards before it touches the farm. We check ahead. We don't experiment first and certify later.
That's how the certification stays honest. The audit isn't a one-time event; it's a permanent operating constraint.
Why Cannabis Makes This Complicated
Most certified organic foods you buy at the grocery store have a simple story. The carrot was grown in certified soil, harvested, washed, packaged, and sold. The certification follows the carrot.
Cannabis isn't that simple.
Cannabis is grown under the Cannabis Act, which means every gram is subject to Health Canada microbial testing. Different product formats have different microbial limits. Inhalable flower has one threshold. Concentrates have a substantially lower one, because the manufacturing process can concentrate microbes alongside the cannabinoids. Infused pre-rolls — flower combined with concentrate — fall under the concentrate threshold for the same reason.
When a lot exceeds the microbial threshold, producers have two options: destroy the lot, or treat it. The standard treatment is gamma irradiation, which kills microbes without leaving residue or affecting the cannabinoid profile. It's safe. It's allowed under the Cannabis Act. It's used routinely across the legal Canadian cannabis industry, including by brands that don't tell you about it.
Here's the catch. Irradiation, while permitted under the Cannabis Act, isn't permitted under the Canadian Organic Regime. The COR doesn't recognise irradiated product as organic, regardless of how the underlying crop was grown. So when an organic farm has to irradiate a lot to meet Health Canada's microbial requirements, that specific lot can't legally be sold as "Certified Organic" — even if every other organic standard was met.
That's the gap. And it's the reason a lot of cannabis brands play loose with the word "organic."
How We Handle It
We're FVOPA Certified Organic at the farm level. That part is always true. Our cultivation methods, our soil, our inputs, and our processes have all been audited and certified, and we recertify every year. There's no asterisk on the farm.
At the product level, we tell you the truth SKU by SKU.
Concentrates and infused pre-rolls. These products fall under the lower microbial threshold and almost always require irradiation to meet Health Canada limits. Our bubble hash and live rosin inputs typically get irradiated. Our infused pre-rolls typically get irradiated. We don't call these products "Certified Organic." They're made from organic flower grown on a certified organic farm, but the irradiation step disqualifies the finished product from the COR organic claim.
Vape carts. Our cured resin vape is extracted using heptane through our local extraction partner, and the heptane extraction process effectively eliminates microbial concerns without irradiation. Our live rosin vape requires a decarboxylation step that uses sustained heat, which kills microbes by the same mechanism. So our vapes don't get irradiated. The catch is on the hardware side: the AIO hardware itself isn't FVOPA-eligible, so we can't put the certified organic mark on the finished SKU even though the cannabis input would otherwise qualify.
Indoor Mango Cake. Indoor flower runs under controlled humidity and tighter environmental control, which keeps microbial loads low. Our indoor Mango Cake has, to our knowledge, never required irradiation. If you're specifically looking for cannabis that meets the certified organic standard at both the farm level and the product level, this is the SKU.
Outdoor flower. When we first started growing outdoors, controlling microbes outside was a genuinely hard problem. Outdoor cannabis is open to the actual environment — wind, dew, ambient bioload — and our early lots were almost always irradiated. Six years in, we've gotten dramatically better at it. Today, roughly 80% of our outdoor flower lots clear Health Canada microbial limits without irradiation. The remaining 20% still get irradiated when they have to. We tell you which is which on the package.
That's how the math actually works. It's not glamorous. It's just true.
Why "Living Soil Organic" Exists as a Term
You'll see us use "Living Soil Organic" at the product level on materials where "Certified Organic" would be misleading for the specific SKU. It isn't a marketing dodge. It's the most accurate, honest description of what the product is.
The cannabis was grown in living soil, with no synthetic inputs, on a FVOPA Certified Organic farm. That part is true regardless of what happened post-harvest. If the lot didn't go through irradiation, the SKU may also be eligible for the Certified Organic claim, and we'll use it. If the lot was irradiated, "Living Soil Organic" describes what the cannabis is without making a regulatory claim it can't legally support.
It's a small thing, and most consumers don't read certifications closely enough to notice the difference. We use the precise language anyway, because the entire point of certification is precision. Cut corners on what you say, and the certification stops meaning anything.
Why We Bother
We were the first outdoor cannabis farm in Canada to be certified by FVOPA. We're still one of a small number of cannabis producers in the country currently holding the certification at all—the honest answer to why is that we were going to grow this way regardless.
The farm runs on living soil that's been built up over eight seasons from rocky, depleted ground. Rainwater is captured in on-site retention ponds. No synthetic nutrients, no synthetic pesticides, no growth media that gets thrown out and replaced. We grow this way because we believe what goes into the soil ends up in the flower, and because regenerative agriculture is the version of cannabis cultivation we want to be part of.
The certification, for us, is a third-party audit of what we'd be doing anyway. The annual inspections, the documentation, the input clearances are all real work; they cost real money, and they're worth it because a certification only means something if it's verified. Anyone can put "organic" on a website. Almost no one can put "FVOPA Certified Organic" on a package.
What This Means for You
If you're shopping for genuinely certified organic cannabis in Canada, here's what to look for.
The producer should be FVOPA Certified Organic at the farm level. That's the threshold question. If they're not on FVOPA's certificate list, the word "organic" anywhere on their packaging is meaningless under Canadian law.
Once you've cleared that filter, check the individual SKU. Some products from a certified farm will carry the Certified Organic claim; others won't, depending on whether they were irradiated to meet Health Canada testing requirements. If the package doesn't say it, ask.
That's the whole framework. It isn't complicated. It just requires a producer willing to be specific about which lots and which SKUs qualify, instead of waving the word "organic" around as a brand asset.
We try to be that producer. The certification is real. The transparency is the point.
