Our Story
We grow cannabis the way we think it should be grown — in living soil, under the sun, and without shortcuts.
GOOD BUDS started on Salt Spring Island in 2017 when brothers Tyler and Alex Rumi decided to build a cannabis farm from scratch. Today, we remain independently owned, family-run, and committed to growing flavourful cannabis using the same principles we started with: living soil, clean inputs, and careful craft.
Why We Grow This Way
Cannabis is a plant. We think it should be grown like one — in soil, under the sun, with clean inputs and real seasons.
When we built this farm, we made a few early decisions that shaped everything after. We'd grow in living soil because we think the biology in the bed — the fungi, the bacteria, the nutrient cycling — contributes to the flavour of the finished plant. We'd grow outdoors on Salt Spring Island because the coastal climate, ocean air, and natural light cycles let the plant develop on its own schedule. And we'd build a farm where the soil gets better every year, not thrown out after each harvest.
That last part is what keeps us here. Our living soil beds have been built and rebuilt over eight growing seasons. Each cycle adds complexity. It's a principle winemakers understand about their land — the longer you work with the same soil, the more it gives back.
It also means less waste. Soil beds get reused. Rainwater from on-site retention ponds replaces municipal supply. Growing under the sun takes a fraction of the energy of indoor production. Those aren't the reason we farm this way, but they're part of why we're proud of it.
We're FVOPA Certified Organic at the farm level — every input and process audited annually by a third-party certifier.
This is our version of what good cannabis looks like. Grown slowly, in living soil, on an island farm that gets a little better at it every year.
Built by Growers
Tyler had been cultivating cannabis since 2005, long before legalization. When he and Alex founded GOOD BUDS in 2017, they combined decades of cultivation experience with the operational side needed to build a licensed cannabis company from the ground up.
Ryan Mant, Tyler's collaborator since grade school, joined them to lead the outdoor operation. Between the three of them, there isn't much they haven't figured out the hard way.
Tyler Rumi
Tyler has been growing cannabis since the mid-2000s, first under the MMAR and later as the driving force behind GOOD BUDS' cultivation programme. He designed the pheno-hunt process that produced Gluerangutan — selecting the strain from 150,000 plants over three outdoor seasons. He oversees all cultivation decisions and is the primary architect of the farm's living soil system.
