Why Outdoor Cannabis Costs Less to Grow & Why Most LPs Still Don't Do It

Outdoor cannabis costs less to grow than indoor cannabis because sunlight, rain, and living soil replace the lighting, climate control, and growth media that indoor facilities pay for every day of the year. That's the short version of the cost argument, and it's true. Math isn’t the reason most Canadian licensed producers still grow indoors, anyway.
It's the genetics. Most cannabis strains in commercial circulation were never built to perform outdoors, and selecting strains that do takes years of unpaid work before you sell a single gram.
This piece is about the economics behind that decision. Why the legal cannabis market is shaped the way it is. Why the middle of that market barely exists. What it actually takes to produce certified organic cannabis at a different cost base.
The Top of Every Agricultural Category Has a Price Ceiling
There's a strawberry sold at Pusateri's in Toronto for around twelve dollars. Eleven berries to the box. They're called Omakase Berries, grown by a company called Oishii in vertical indoor farms, and the price reflects the input cost: climate-controlled growing rooms, hand pollination, year-round production in a region that doesn't naturally support strawberry farming.
People do buy them. They're real, and they're genuinely good strawberries. The existence of a twelve-dollar strawberry doesn't tell you anything about what a strawberry should cost. It tells you what the top of the category looks like when you remove every constraint nature would otherwise impose.
The legal cannabis market in Canada looks a lot like this. There's an ultra-premium tier of small-batch indoor flower at premium price points, often genuinely well-grown. There's a commodity tier producing cannabis at industrial scale, optimised for yield and consistency. In the middle —where genuinely clean cannabis sits at a price most people can actually access— there's almost nothing. Most consumers are choosing between paying for the top of the category or paying less for something grown differently than they might assume.
The gap isn't an accident. It's a structural consequence of how the industry was built.
Why Indoor Cannabis Costs What It Does
Indoor cultivation is expensive by design. Every gram carries the overhead of the building it was grown in — HVAC, dehumidification, lighting, sealed rooms, redundant power, and growth media that gets replaced between cycles. Hydroponic and rockwool systems require synthetic nutrient regimes formulated for predictable yield. That's the design goal, and the input cost reflects it.
What that means in practice: A craft indoor producer running a small flower room is paying the same per-gram facility cost as a licensed micro three doors down, plus the labour to actually tend the plants. When you see a Canadian craft brand at thirty-eight or forty dollars an eighth, that price isn't arbitrary. It's the math working backwards from a cost structure that was set the day the building went up.
High-tech greenhouses sit in roughly the same place. The capital cost of building a sealed greenhouse with supplemental lighting and full environmental control is enormous, and the per-gram economics aren't dramatically better than a well-run indoor facility.
This is the cost base most Canadian licensed cannabis sits on top of. It's the reason "premium" and "organic" tend to show up at the same price tier. The underlying production model is expensive whether the inputs are organic or not.
Outdoor Is the Structural Answer. It's Just Hard.
Outdoor cultivation works from a fundamentally different cost base. Sunlight is free. Rain is free. The soil, if you build it correctly, gets richer every year instead of being thrown out and replaced. The largest line items on an indoor producer's budget—energy and HVAC—drop out almost entirely.
That's where opportunity lies. The reason most licensed producers still don't take it is that outdoor cultivation is genuinely difficult, and the difficulty isn't where most people assume.
The hard part isn't growing cannabis in the rain. It's finding cannabis genetics that can grow well in the rain.
Most cannabis genetics in commercial circulation were selected indoors over decades of prohibition-era breeding. The work happened in basements, sealed rooms, and converted warehouses, where breeders selected for traits that thrive under artificial light, controlled humidity, and tightly managed environments. Take those genetics and put them in an actual field, and most of them fail. Some bud out too early. Some can't handle late-season rain. Some run too tall, or too leafy, or finish soft. The terpene expression that made the strain interesting indoors quietly disappears.
Selecting cannabis genetics that thrive outdoors is years of work. The strain has to finish before the fall rains, hold up to BC's coastal weather, and still deliver on potency, terpene expression, and shelf appeal. You plant. You observe. You select. You cross and backcross. You cull most of what you grew. Then you do it again the next season. None of that work pays you while you're doing it.

This is the actual barrier to entry for outdoor cannabis production in Canada. The math is favourable once you have the genetics. Getting the genetics is what stops most people.
What We Did
GOOD BUDS was licensed as Canada's first licensed outdoor cannabis cultivation facility in 2019. The farm operates on Salt Spring Island in BC's Southern Gulf Islands. FVOPA Certified Organic, living soil beds running since the first season, rainwater captured in on-site retention ponds, no synthetic inputs.
We've stabilised two strains for outdoor production: Gluerangutan and Timewarp. Gluerangutan was pheno-hunted from roughly 150,000 plants in 2019 and backcrossed across multiple seasons to lock in the expression. Timewarp is a BC heirloom with Texada Timewarp roots, selected by Tyler for the dark cherry and orange citrus nose he kept seeing in our beds. Both finish before the fall rains. Both produce the terpene loads the strains are known for. Gluerangutan, our flagship outdoor strain, tests at 3.6–4.8% total terpenes, the highest in our portfolio.
There are honest trade-offs. Outdoor harvest happens once a year, in a fixed window. Bud density is typically a touch looser than what you'd see from the same strain grown indoors, though Gluerangutan is a notable exception in our lineup. We work within those constraints because the production model only works if you accept them.
What This Means for the Category
The structural argument is simple. When the production cost base is genuinely lower (not because corners are being cut, but because nature is doing work that indoor producers pay for), the resulting flower can sit somewhere other than the top of the price tier.
This matters for a category that's currently barbelled. Certified organic cannabis in Canada has, until recently, been a luxury proposition, and not because organic farming is intrinsically expensive. It's because most Canadian cannabis is grown indoors, and indoor production sets the price floor. When the production model itself is the input cost, organic certification ends up layered on top of an already premium tier.
Outdoor cultivation breaks that pattern. Whether the rest of the category follows is up to other producers and the genetics work they're willing to do.
The Strawberry, Again
Some people will always pay twelve dollars for eleven strawberries, and that's fine. The market for the top of any agricultural category exists for good reasons. It's not how most strawberries are grown, sold, or eaten — and it shouldn't be the only way most people experience the category.
Cannabis works the same way. The top of the market exists. It will keep existing. The real question is whether there's a meaningful middle—clean, certified, properly grown—that doesn't require paying for a building's worth of overhead with every gram.
