The Genetics Problem: Why Most Cannabis Strains Fail Outdoors

Shortly, most cannabis strains fail outdoors because they were bred indoors. Most people don’t realise until they’ve tried it.

Decades of prohibition-era breeding happened in basements and sealed rooms. Breeders were selecting for traits that work under artificial light, controlled humidity, and a 12/12 cycle. Put those same plants in an actual field, with real weather and a fixed harvest window, and most of them can't finish. The ones that do finish often can't hold their structure, or they show up looking like the strain on paper but smelling like nothing in particular.

This is the part of outdoor cultivation that nobody really talks about. Selecting cannabis genetics that thrive outdoors takes years of pheno-hunting, regional adaptation, and a lot of culling. Here’s what outdoor cultivation actually looks like on our farm.

Why Indoor Genetics Don't Travel Well

Indoor cannabis has been selected for indoor problems. Tight internodal spacing, because indoor plants are stacked close together. Fast flowering response under a 12/12 light cycle, because indoor producers want fast turns. High yield in confined vertical space. Resistance to the very specific mould pressures of a sealed room with controlled humidity.

None of that helps a plant survive the transition to a field on Salt Spring Island. We know this because we tested it. Over the years, we've run a long list of indoor-bred genetics outdoors, looking for the rare ones that could handle the move. The list of strains that didn't make it is longer than the list that did.

Cookie God. Salty God. Sapphire OG. Dosi Melon. Chemdog. AK-47. Durban Poison. A Key Lime CBD cross we had high hopes for. A range of California genetics from leading breeders, including some cuts that are considered outdoor-viable on paper. We ran a Sea Warp a few years back that yielded well but produced flat terpenes and nothing remarkable, so we pushed it into concentrate inputs and moved on. Some of these strains came partway. Most of them got nowhere.

Northern California genetics, in particular, look like they should work here. Salt Spring's climate has real overlap with the region: Dry summers, late-finishing windows, similar light hours. Unfortunately, the overlap isn't enough. Salt Spring has its own pressures, its own soil, its own ocean breeze coming up the beds in the late afternoon, and most California cuts that arrive with strong outdoor reputations don't fully express themselves the same way once they're in our climate.

Which raises the obvious question: Why bother? The short answer is that once you have the right genetics, the math is favourable. The genetics problem is not a matter of shopping your way out of it: You have to do the selection work yourself. Here’s how we select for the right genetics.

What Outdoor-Viable Actually Means Here

When I'm looking at a new phenotype in our R&D plot, there are really four things I'm asking about it. A plant that fails on any one of them is out.

  1. The finish window. It starts to rain on Salt Spring around mid-October. By that point, the mornings are already heavy with dew, and the plant has to either finish before that window opens or be aggressively mould-resistant. There isn't really a third option. Late-finishing strains without strong botrytis resistance will rot before harvest, no matter how good the genetics look on paper in August.

  2. Bud structure. Outdoor buds are typically a touch looser than the same strain grown indoors. That's normal, and we expect it, but there's a limit. If the structure gets too larfy, the bud doesn't dry well, doesn't process well, and won't sell. Timewarp is about as loose as we'll go, and the rest of the plant has to be unusually good to earn that pass.

  3. Terpene loudness. The one most people underestimate. Outdoor terpene expression is shaped by living soil, sun, temperature swings, and salt air. The genetics either express loudly under that pressure, or they don't. A subtle nose indoors becomes a quiet nose outdoors. We need plants that arrive loud and stay loud.

  4. Yield. Even with everything else working, if a phenotype doesn't yield commercially, it stays in the R&D plot. We love a beautiful plant, but we're a working farm, not a hobby garden.

The Texada Timewarp Selection — A Case Study

The cleanest way to show what this work looks like is to walk through one of the selections, start to finish, so here's the Texada Timewarp story.

Texada Timewarp is a BC heirloom, a classic Canadian outdoor strain with deep roots in this region's growing history. We started running Texada crosses in our R&D plots a few years back, looking for a phenotype with the structural traits we needed and an expressive terpene profile that would justify a commercial release.

Most of the early candidates were nothing special. Undersized plants, undersized buds, and finishing problems. Out of that pool, four phenotypes survived the first round of culling. Good yields, decent bud density, structure that held up. We were excited about all four, so we ran them again in subsequent seasons, indoors and out, to see how each one held up under different pressures.

Cut #1had a beautiful pink lychee nose. Tropical, floral, distinctive. The kind of bouquet that stops you in the drying room. We almost picked it for its flavour profile alone, but as we grew it more and tested it, the terpenes weren't loud enough. The total terpene number came in low, and the THC was a touch lower than we wanted. Perfect nose, wrong volume. It got cut.

Cut #2had volume in spades. The terpenes were as loud as anything we'd grown, the THC was high, the yield was great, and on paper, it looked like the winner. The problem was the nose. You could be generous and call it a sharp white wine. The truth is, it smelled like cat urine. Almost ammonia, not pleasant. Strong, but wrong. It got cut.

Cut #3sat in between. A bit peppery. Nothing remarkable in either direction. Cut.

Cut #4was the Goldilocks. Almost as loud as the cat-urine phenotype, but the nose was a deep, soft cherry with orange rind on the back end. When you pinched the bud between your fingers, it left them sticky, and the smell coming off was rich enough that walking past the drying room, you'd catch it from across the building. Closer to a fancy Luxardo cherry liqueur than anything we'd grown before. THC came in strong. Yield was solid. Structure held.

Cut #4 became the cut we now run as Timewarp. One phenotype out of four serious finalists, out of dozens of Texada crosses, out of hundreds of phenotypes we've trialled over the years.

Gluerangutan Took a Different Path

Gluerangutan was a different kind of project. We started in 2019 with 160,000 F1 seeds from a Harambe-variety lineage (OG Kush × GG4 × Afghani Hash Plant). The first round of selection happened that season, but the strain didn't really come together overnight. We ran it across multiple seasons, kept the cuts we liked indoors for a while to maintain and refine them, then pushed it back outside as we backcrossed for stability.

The first commercial Gluerangutan flower we sold was actually grown indoors, because that's where the genetics were being held while we kept refining. By 2022, we had it running outdoors at full scale, which stabilised the expression and the terpene load it's now known for.

From the start to a commercially viable outdoor product: Roughly three years of work.

What This Means

There's no shortcut to outdoor cannabis genetics. You can't license your way in, you can't speed-run the selection, and you can't take indoor cuts with strong reputations and expect them to perform in real weather. The work is years of unpaid effort before you have a saleable harvest, and most of what you grow during those years gets culled.

This is the actual reason most Canadian licensed producers stick to indoor cultivation. The cost economics of outdoor are genuinely favourable once you have the genetics. Getting the genetics is the part that stops most people.

We've been at it since 2019. Right now, we have two strains we trust outside.
