Organic vs regenerative cannabis: what's the difference?

Organic and regenerative aren't the same thing, though they often get used as if they are. Organic describes what goes into the plant. Regenerative describes what happens to the soil it's grown in. A cannabis grow can be fully organic and still throw away its growing medium after every harvest. Regenerative growing is the part that reuses the soil instead. This article explains the difference and where the lines actually fall.
What does "organic" mean in cannabis?
Organic cultivation is about inputs. A certified organic grow doesn't use synthetic mineral salts for nutrients or synthetic pesticides — it feeds plants with naturally derived amendments instead. In Canada, the cannabis-specific organic standard is FVOPA certification, which audits what a producer is allowed to put into the soil and onto the plant.
Organic is a meaningful standard. It removes the manufacturing footprint of synthetic fertilisers and the runoff they cause downstream. Compared to conventional synthetic cultivation, it's a real reduction in environmental cost. But it only governs the inputs. It says nothing about whether the soil those inputs go into gets reused or discarded.
What does "regenerative" mean?
Regenerative growing is about the soil itself. Instead of treating growing medium as a consumable — fresh in, spent out, every cycle — a regenerative grow builds a living soil system and reuses it across many crops, amending it rather than replacing it. The aim is soil that improves over time instead of being thrown away and rebought.
The key distinction: organic is about what you feed the plant; regenerative is about not discarding the soil to do it. The two overlap, but they're not the same, and a grower can do one without the other.
Can cannabis be organic but not regenerative?
Yes — and this is the common case. Many organic cannabis producers grow in pre-mixed organic substrate and feed bottled organic nutrients, then discard the spent medium at the end of a cycle and start the next crop with a fresh batch. The inputs are organic, and the runoff problem is solved, but the medium itself is still single-use. Soil in, soil out, every harvest.
That's not a criticism so much as a description. Buying pre-mixed organic substrate is consistent, predictable, and far better for the environment than synthetic growing. It's a legitimate choice with real advantages. It just isn't regenerative, because the soil isn't being reused.
So is regenerative "better" than organic?
It depends what you're measuring, and it's worth being honest about the trade-offs rather than declaring a winner.
On waste, regenerative reuse produces less, because the medium isn't discarded each cycle. On soil biology, a reused living soil tends to develop more complexity over years than a fresh batch used once. Those are genuine advantages.
But regenerative growing is also slower, less predictable, and harder to correct when something goes wrong, because you're working with a biological system on its own timeline rather than dialling in a measured feed. Bought organic substrate gives up some of the waste and soil-biology benefits in exchange for consistency and control. Reasonable producers weigh that trade-off differently. Neither approach is free of cost — regenerative growing has its own constraints, and we'd be overstating things to call it flawless.
How can a buyer tell the difference?
The labels won't always help, because "living soil" and "regenerative" aren't certified terms the way organic is — anyone can use them. The questions that actually separate them:
Is the soil reused across crops, or replaced each cycle? Was the growing medium built on-site and amended over time, or bought pre-mixed? How long have the same beds been in production? A regenerative grow will have specific answers — several years, a description of the beds. Vague "living soil" language with nothing behind it is the signal to keep asking.
How GOOD BUDS does it
Here's the part where I point at our own farm, since it sits at the regenerative end of this.
GOOD BUDS is FVOPA Certified Organic — so the inputs side is covered — but the part we'd point to is the soil. Our living soil beds have been in continuous reuse since 2019, indoors and outdoors. We've never replaced them; we amend them and grow again. That makes us regenerative as well as organic: certified inputs going into soil we don't throw away.
We're not going to claim we've solved environmental impact, because no farm has, and growing cannabis has a footprint no matter how you do it. What we can say plainly is how our method differs from organic-but-single-use growing: we reuse the soil instead of rebuying it. Whether that matters to you is a fair thing to decide for yourself once you know the difference.
